Minutes of October 14, 2008

Present:  Michelle Degree, Elise Kuder, Chris Pratt, Randy Smith, Roger Sweet, Eric White, Hilliare Wilder and Becky Cummings.

Minutes of the September meeting were accepted as read.

Roger gave a brief wrap-up of old business.  The scrap metal clean-up brought in $1943.00 with 3.6 tons of light metal, 6.5 tons of heavy metal, 440 lbs. of aluminum and .29 of propane tanks.  Work at Jewett Park will take place on Nov. 15th.  Logging on the Sweet’s property is going slowly because the ground is still very soft.  The town energy audit is on the “to do” list.  Eric installed the conservation bulletin board in the town hall entry way.  Hikes, seasonal events and conservation information will be posted on it.  The town has yet to receive a permit to install the new dry hydrant near Route 9.  Mike Blair of SWRP is available locally only a few days a week and Sullivan’s mapping project is on hold for the time being.

Christa, Eric and Roger plan to attend the 38th Annual NH Association of Conservation Commissions.

This Saturday there will be a Harris Center hike to the Bear Dens.  Meet at the Route 10 parking area at 10 a.m.

Hikers on the preliminary trek to the scene of Mrs. Nash’s murder found one cellar hole and a possible sight of the mine.

Randy said the town had finally received a permit to replace the culvert on Gilsum Rd. but they are still waiting for others submitted at the same time.  The Gilsum Rd. project will take place next summer.

Alerts have been circulated about the appearance of the Asian longhorn beetle in the Worcester, MA area.  The beetles have done a great deal of damage there and it’s feared the beetle will expand its area.  Asian longhorns are often confused with the sawyer beetle, which is a bit smaller and has smaller white spots.

Roger asked for nominations from the floor for a new commission chairman.  Eric White was nominated, seconded and elected unanimously.  He accepted and will take on chairmanship at the November meeting.

Roger will lead a hike up Mt. Monadnock beginning at the old toll road off Rt. 124 in Jaffrey on Nov. 21st.  If anyone would like to carpool, they should call him.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Becky Cummings
