Minutes of November 21, 2011

Members present: J.J. Prior, Stephanie Kleine, Chris Pratt, Jen Labadie, Paul Bolduc, and Malinda Scherpa.  This was not an official meeting of the Harrisville School Board.  We met with Earl Horne (board chair) and Emily Hartshorne, principal of the Wells Memorial School.
Absent were Dana Briggs, Matt Burke, and Julie Wilber.

The meeting opened at 7 PM Emily and Earl conducted a tour of the building.  Then we discussed the 13 questions.  On the question of tuition, their proposed amount is $11,600 per student.  Special education costs would be billed based on the services provided, not a set tuition.  On the issue of busing, Earl felt that there might be some possibility of coordinating some of Harrisville’s bus routes with a Sullivan bus.

One of the highlights of their curriculum is their Spanish program which has a goal of each 6th grader having an equivalency of high school Spanish I before they leave the Wells School.  There is emphasis placed on the arts including dance, music, and art.  Service to community and service learning projects are emphasized.  These include gardening, media skills, slide shows, press releases.  The transition to middle school is carefully handled.  Graduate outcomes are followed beyond high school.

Harrisville has a before and after school program, but it is not eligible for a 20st century grant because there are not enough “school lunch” students.  However, they may qualify next year.  The possibility of a bus transport to Sullivan for such a program was discussed.

The next meeting of our committee was scheduled for 30 November 2011 at 6:30 PM at the town hall.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

C. Christopher Pratt
